It was raining. Jim was walking home. Well, running's more of a fitting word. The streets where deserted. The rain pounded his skin like a thousand bees. His mom was gonna KILL him! Thunder boomed, lightning crashed, and in the blinding light, Jim tripped. He landed face first in the mud. There was a patter patter of bare feet against the wet road. He saw the hem of a purple skirt. The person in front of him kneeled down in front of him. The girl had raven black hair and emerald green eyes. She looked about eleven, a year younger than he.

"Are you alright?" she asked. She held out her hand. Jim took it.

"Aren't you cold?" he asked. The long sleeves of her shirt where the only things she was wearing that might've held heat. She shrugged and took off running, trying to get out of the rain. Jim decided he might wanna get home. But before he even moved an inch-

"Where did you get these coins, Gypsy?!" A gruff voice said.

"I earned them!" replied a stubborn voice. The voice belong to the girl he just met. Jim turned around. He saw the girl struggling to get out of the grasp of two soldiers, her tiny bare feet trying to kick them where it mattered.

"Gypsies don't earn, they steal!" the other soldier replied, tightening his grip.

"Well, I earned them! Lemme go!" She yelled, struggling harder.

"Let's put this little witch where she belongs—LOCKED UP!" the two soldiers guffawed at this, as if it where funny. Jim didn't think so, and the terrified looked on the girl's face made him want to help her. He ran over to the scene. The soldiers didn't seem to notice him. They seemed too preoccupied on what they should do with the "little witch". The little girl, on the other hand, looked at Jim with pleading eyes. Jim acted on instinct. He rushed at the soldiers.

"HEY!" he yelled, punching the first one square in the jaw. The other drew his sword. The girl kicked him in the shin. She twisted free of his grasp. For good measure, she kicked his head. Jim grabbed her wrist, picked up a small bag that he guessed contained money, and took off running, the rain stinging worse and worse with every step. He stopped under a small gazebo in a park that wasn't far away from his home.

"You okay?" he asked the girl. She smiled at him.

"Yeah. Thank you." she replied. Jim handed her the bag.

"I'm Jim by the way."

"Esmeralda." the girl replied. She suddenly looked alarmed "I've gotta go!" She grabbed the bag and sprinted away. Jim sighed, and sprinted in the direction of his house.

"Mom's gonna kill me." he muttered as he ran.

One Week Later

"Jim, can you go to the market and get some bread?" His mother asked, handing him some coins. He nodded and took off toward the market. Halfway there he heard someone crying. He walked in the direction of the crying. It was that girl he met a week ago. She was clutching her right wrist. Jim could see blood streaming from underneath her hand.

"Are you okay?" He asked. She looked at him and attempted to hide the injury by folding her left hand over the injured wrist.
"What happened?" Jim asked, joining her. There was a pause.

"It's nothing." she replied.

"Obviously it's something, 'cuz you where crying about it." He said. There was another pause.

"Voodoo." Esmeralda said suddenly.

"'Scuse me?" Jim asked, confused.

"My father practices voodoo magic." she sniffed and went on, "He was testing a different kind of ritual."

"On you?"

"Yeah."

Jim looked at Esmeralda. "Have you told anyone? Other than me?"
She shrugged. "Who would I tell?" I don't have any friends."

"You've got me." Jim said, patting her shoulder. Esmeralda smiled.
